Britain pours more money into Pakistan
Atlanta News.Net Thursday 3rd July, 2008
Britain says it will double assistance to Pakistan to secure the trouble-plagued border, which is shared with Afghanistan.
Taliban militants battling British and other foreign troops in Afghanistan have sanctuaries in the lawless border regions.
The increase in aid will make Islamabad the second biggest recipient of British aid.
The aid increase of up to £480 million was announced by British Secretary of State for International Development, Douglas Alexander, during a meeting in Islamabad.
He said the UK assistance would focus on health, good governance and earthquake-affected reconstruction for a northern region, which was devastated by an earthquake in October 2005.
He said there would be a special emphasis on assistance to the border areas as well as on education, to put five million children into school.
