US allied forces march into Taliban territory
Atlanta News.Net Thursday 2nd July, 2009
Taliban strongholds in southern Afghanistan have been infiltrated by US Marines who are part of a major operation under the imprimatur of President Barack Obama.
As part of the president’s strategy to stabilise the country 4,000 marines have been sent in to destroy Taliban lairs.
US troops and about 650 Afghan troops and police have already pushed forward in armoured convoys and helicopters.
The troops are concentrating on the lower Helmand River valley, the heart of the Taliban insurgency.
The troops have been told to flush out insurgents and maintain security prior to presidential elections next year.
Most Afghan opium is grown in Helmand province. It accounts for more than 90 percent of the world's supply
