All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey won't play Thursday night when the Carolina Panthers host the Atlanta Falcons, ESPN reported.

Earlier this week, the Panthers designated him to return from injured reserve. However, he has not been officially activated.

McCaffrey has been sidelined since Week 2 with a high ankle sprain and the team initially said he could return in 4-6 weeks.

McCaffrey, 24, who racked up more than 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving in 2019, ran for 156 yards and four touchdowns and caught seven passes for 67 yards in Carolina's first two games.

The No. 8 overall draft pick in 2017, McCaffrey has gained 5,666 yards from scrimmage and scored 43 TDs in 50 career games.

The Panthers (3-4) are 16th in the NFL in total offense but 27th in scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

McCaffrey's return to action is likely to come next week, when the Panthers travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs on Nov. 8.
